Amazon.co.uk Review The Sony D-EJ625 CD Walkman is one of the more affordable portable CD players from Sony's extensive range. It is lightweight, thanks to the plastic construction, and it slips neatly into a jacket pocket. The only obviously vulnerable part is the plastic catch that closes the lid, though our testing revealed no flaws. Controls consist of the basics and little more, apart from the Mega Bass settings, which add plenty of thump. The important functions are duplicated on a small control pad halfway along the headphone cord. The only really annoying feature is the insistent beep that accompanies skipping backwards and forwards through a CD. While still a fairly swish piece of kit, it lacks the usual Sony design flair and build quality. Two rechargeable AA batteries supply the power and the supplied recharger plugs directly into the player. Battery life is top-notch. Sony reckons about 36 hours, which is optimistic, but it's good for a long return journey and more.
The problem with many portable CD players is skipping. You have to be reasonably gentle with them. The big feature of the D-EJ625 is Sony's superb G-Protection system, which renders it "jog-proof". And indeed it is--it takes a pretty rigorous and lengthy shake to overload the system and even then it recovers very quickly. This means you can slip it into your pocket or use the carrying handle and jump about at will, it's quite remarkable. Once you've got used to it you'll be hard pushed to go back to a player without such a system.
The Sony D-EJ625 CD Walkman is excellent value. It's not perhaps the most well-featured player you'll find, but the superb G-Protection system makes it an attractive choice for the money.--Miles Berkeley
