Summer BBQ’s

With the weather warming up, the chances are that you will be invited to a BBQ very soon. These needn’t be a disaster area for dedicated slimmers; it just takes a little thought and planning beforehand. Follow the tips below for fat-free fare:

Make sure that you eat a low calorie light meal before you leave. BBQ’s are notoriously slow to get going and it is so easy to pick at crisps and nuts while you wait for the food to be cooked.

Avoid lager or beer and stick to white wine with soda water if you are drinking alcohol. Try to alternate each alcoholic drink with a glass of mineral water. Alcohol leaves you feeling dehydrated and mixed with a hot day, could lead to illness.

Nibble on crudités. It is a good idea to bring a small tub full of ready chopped carrots, cucumber, celery etc. Pop those onto one of your hostess’ plates or a paper plate and nobody will notice.

Avoid eating sausages, beef burgers or pork chops. These are all high in fat and calories. Stick to chicken pieces.

Fill up on plenty of salad and a jacket potato.

Tips to keep motivated on your weight loss plan

1. Choose a target weight loss of just 7Ibs at a time. Reward yourself each time you reach this target with a non-food treat. Ideal treats are a massage, manicure, trip to the theatre – anything that makes you feel special.

2. Try sticking a photograph of yourself at the weight you want to be, or a photo of someone that you admire, on the fridge door, biscuit barrel or crisp tin, it should be just the deterrent that you need.

3. Keep in touch with other slimmers by using the message board and chat room. It’s so great to feel that you are not alone.

4. Avoid telling friends and work colleagues that you are on a diet. For some people this is a great excuse to try and make you eat.

5. If you work in a place where bringing cakes into work is the norm for any occasion, make sure that you bring in supply of ready-prepared fruits such as strawberries, raspberries and melon in a container. You can then join in with the celebration without feeling left out.

6. If you feel that life without a couple of biscuits with a morning cup of coffee is not a life worth living, try two rich tea biscuits. At only 30 calories each, they can easily be incorporated into your daily allowance.

7. Look through a fashion catalogue and choose your holiday wardrobe. Tell yourself that you will wear that swimsuit.

8. Make sure that as you lose weight, you buy something new that fits. Avoid always walking around in your old baggy clothes.

9. Don’t be too hard on yourself. If you pig out one day, just forget about it and start again the following day.

10. Find an exercise that you enjoy. It doesn’t have to be Lycra in the gym. Try walking, dancing, golf, tennis, anything that gets you moving and that you enjoy will help with your weight loss.
