August 2003
August finds us well in to the summer and many of us will be jetting off on our annual holidays or enjoying the sunshine at home. It can be a difficult time for slimmers as bodies are bared on the beach and the shorts are staring at us in the cupboard. Try and think positively and assure yourself that you are well on the way to your target weight and that your have taken positive steps to eat a healthier diet and increase your exercise.

BBQ’s for Veggies!
If your idea of a BBQ is to throw on as many sausages, burgers and chicken legs as you can, you might be thrown by the addition of a vegetarian to your party. However there are many delicious foods that can be barbecued successfully and enjoyed by both vegetarians and meat eaters. Here are a few examples you can try.
Mushrooms with Boursin
Take the large flat mushrooms, brush the outside with a little oil and fill with boursin cheese. Cook on the BBQ until the cheese has melted.
Quorn Kebabs
Thread cubed Quorn onto skewers with chopped peppers and cherry tomatoes and cook on the BBQ, turning frequently.
Aubergine wraps
BBQ sliced aubergine until soft. Place a sundried tomato and mozzarella cheese in the middle and wrap the aubergine around. Secure with a toothpick and warm through.
Garlic Potatoes
Wrap small new potatoes in foil with garlic butter and black pepper, BBQ slowly until tender.
Red Onions with Rice
Remove the centre from a large red onion and fill with cooked rice, wrap in foil and cook slowly.
Vegetable Kebabs with Halloumi
Make veggie kebabs with peppers, mushrooms, cherry toms, courgettes (or whatever veg you have in stock). Cut the halloumi (Greek cheese) into cubes and include this on the skewers. Cook on the BBQ turning slowly.
Exercise – How to keep motivated
There never seems a good time to exercise. The winter gives us the excuse that it is too cold, too dark and the summer means that it is too hot and there is always ‘something going on’. The greatest motivation is seeing results, however it can take at least a month before these start to show. Use the following to help you get started or keep going.
Think of the extra calories you will be burning up each day. A half hour of swimming will burn up 108 calories.
An hour walking briskly around the shopping centre with burn up 100 calories.
100 calories burned each day for one year will mean that you will lose over a stone in weight without cutting down on food or drink.
Try 20 sit-ups per day and firm up your tummy. Get your belly button pierced as a reward!
20 minutes of high impact aerobics burns up 130 calories, enough for two gin and tonics or a glass of wine.
Walking or jogging around the park in the sunshine will help you get a tan, without even trying.
