THERE’S MORE TO EXERCISE THAN THE GYM!

We all know that part of losing weight is taking part in a regular exercise plan. However, the Gym can be expensive, time consuming and more than a little intimidating. But there are alternatives which can be fun and it is always a good idea to vary your exercise plan to stop getting bored. Dance is always a fun way to keep fit and you don’t have to have trained since the age of three to take part. See some ideas below.

SALSA DANCING

A great way to keep fit and meet new friends. You don’t always need a partner for these classes as many of them work in lines as a solo. It is best suited to those with a good sense of rhythm and timing as the routines can be quite complicated, however most centres will hold beginners classes which will work at a much slower rate.
More information can be found on www.salsa.co.uk
If you prefer to salsa at home try: Everybody Salsa by Irene Miguel which is a good beginner’s video.

BELLY DANCING

One for ladies only, this is an exotic way to tone up your tummy, upper arms and thighs as well as improving your general fitness. Belly dancing is relatively easy to do and is suitable for all ages. Many participants like to wear the traditional garments but this isn’t compulsory and usually just a shawl tied around the hips is enough to get you swaying!

LINE DANCING

Line dancing can vary from simple routines suitable for all to highly complicated routines used in competition. Many local dance centres now offer line dancing and it is suitable for all ages, like belly dancing many dancers like to wear cowboy boots and fringed clothes but again this isn’t compulsory and jeans and t-shirts are fine. You don’t need a partner and routines are performed as solos.

BALLET

Not so impossible and it sounds, ballet work-outs are the new craze in America popularised by the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker from Sex in the City. These work-outs can be found in some health clubs and are high impact aerobic coupled with muscle lengthening exercises. Almost as effective are traditional ballet classes which offer similar benefits at a much gentler pace. You will need ballet shoes and comfortable Lycra clothing. Some ballet classes insist on a uniform which is usually a leotard, chiffon skirt and tights for women and leggings and t-shirt for men.

If you prefer to dance at home try: New York City Ballet Workout

JAZZ

This is another very aerobic type of dance which is best suited to those who are quite fit and well co-ordinated. Classes can be found at many dance centres and it is easier to follow the instructor if you can find a studio with mirrors. The energetic dance routines are so much fun that it is easy to forget that you are exercising. Good aerobic shoes or specialised jazz boots are needed along with Lycra clothing.

THE GREAT BBQ SEASON

Well we will have some sun at some time and then there will be a rush for the BBQ’s and often a rush for casualty as undercooked food (albeit black on the outside) is served in too warm conditions.

As well as the dangers of food contamination and the risk of burning from petrol driven flames, we dieters have to think what we are eating and drinking. All in all BBQ’s can take a lot of preparation, but if the sun is shining and the company is good, they are well worth it. Find below some tips to help you survive the BBQ season.

If it’s your BBQ:

Prepare a large bowl of colourful mixed salad using mixed lettuce leave, sliced red, yellow and green peppers, cherry tomatoes and bean sprouts.

Prepare two or three side dishes, something like grated carrot with a few raisins, beetroot with chopped spring onions or cous cous with curry powder.

Part-cook chicken pieces in the oven beforehand to ensure that they are thoroughly cooked through.

Try extra large mushrooms and tomatoes cooked on the BBQ, they taste great and are low in calories.

Jacket Potatoes wrapped in tin foil can be cooked in the BBQ coals.

If it’s a friends BBQ:

Try eating a low-calorie snack before you go, that way you will not be starving when you get there.

Avoid eating the burgers, sausages and pork kebabs. They are high in calories.

Try to stick to chicken pieces or lean chops, fill up on salads if there are any or plain bread/rolls.

Be careful with your alcohol intake – alternate an alcoholic drink with a glass of water.
