DETOXIFICATION by Mathew Lidner (BSc hons)
Some people believe that a 1 or 2-week detox plan will help a lot! It will help but its best to have a detox plan that lasts between 3-4 weeks and longer if your will power allows. Its best over this time period as it allows you to cut down gradually on ‘bad’ food without having to go cold turkey. Detox is to flush out the toxins, to help the skin and lose excess weight. It’s beneficial mostly for the immune system, liver, kidneys, gut skin and hair. Detox is not like dieting or going to the gym and it does not work for everyone at the same level. In fact there are some side effects with detoxing: It can bring on headaches and you may start to feel more tired or urinate more. (However this is common and is usually only in the early phases of a detox plan.) People tend to start a detox plan as they become: lethargic, feel heavy, have skin problems or over-indulge. It is best on a detox plan to cut down/eliminate foods like: Coffee, alcohol, dairy products, meats, fried foods, wheat and too much salt or fat however you don’t necessarily have to give up all fats as some fats can boost the energy system. Instead of the foods above; try to stick to foods like; fruit (not too many bananas), vegetables (not too many potatoes), salads, water, herbal teas and fruit juices. However the detox superfoods are: Apples, lemons, carrots, broccoli, nuts and cereals and foods close to their natural state like organic food.
