Salt In Your Diet

Adults should have no more than 6 grams of salt a day, which is about a teaspoonful. On average people are actually having approximately 10.0g of salt a day.

Eating too much salt can increase your blood pressure, which can lead to heart desease or stroke. The problem is normally not so much the salt we add ourselves but the amount that is already in many of the processed foods we eat such as breakfast cereals, ready meals, sauces, biscuits and soups. Figures say that in the UK, 85% men and 69% women eat too much salt.

So how do you cut down.

When you are shopping check the nutrition information on the food label there will normally be a quoted figure of how much sodium per 100g is in the food

0.5g sodium or more per 100g is a lot of sodium
0.1g sodium or less per 100g is a little sodium

Try to avoid eating too much food that contains 0.5g sodium or more per 100g.
