Slimming Q& A

Question :
Hi I have just signed up as a member and wondered if you could answer a couple of questions for me, I like to allow myself a treat every now and again on my diet as other wise I feel hard done by.

For 6 months I gave up chocolate and only drank limited alcohol and found it really easy, then I started working in an off-license and since then I just cannot stop myself pigging out. It doesn’t matter how much I try and stop myself.

I’ve tried all the tricks in the book. The guilt I feel after wards is terrible. Why has this happened and how do I get myself back on track hypnotherapy seems drastic but I have considered it.

Also, at the moment I enjoy walking, I walk quite fast and on a weekend can do up to 8 miles at a time but would like to go further and take up jogging but each time I try I feel lousy, running around my town seems embarrassing and awkward I sense I'm being stared at. How do I go about getting over this and taking my idea further.

Hope you can help.

Answer:
I am going to try and answer your question in 2 parts, firstly well done for the 6 months of abstinence from chocolate and alcohol, I am pleased you did find this easy as this means that you do have willpower and should be able to do this again if you wish too. However I am afraid you have put yourself in the Lions den by working in an off license with all those tempting snacks and drinks around! Many people who work in these sorts of establishments including fast food outlets do find it hard not to eat what is pretty much put out in front of them especially if they get it cheaply or for free. The guilt then riddles you afterwards and is like a vicious cycle as guilt upsets people and people tend to eat these snacks when they feel guilty, upset or depressed.

In terms of what to do I would say you have a few options, firstly you could quit the job ( a bit drastic I know but that would definitely help as it would take the temptation away). You could try hypnotherapy of some kind - these sessions actually do help a lot but are fairly costly at £25+ per hour. Or you could carry on working and keep a snack diary, in the first week treat it as normal write down all the snacks you are eating and the calorie content then each week have 1 choc bar/drink less and see that calorie content come down on paper until you are only eating say 2 bars per week.

The other thing I would suggest is to fill up before you go to work say on high fibre foods, (fruit and veg, cereal, yogurt, potatoes, spinach, pasta, bread etc.) so you do not feel like eating anything when you arrive at work for a shift.

Secondly in response to you walking and jogging then again well done for continuing with exercises - let me assure you that people do not stare for fun as there are thousands of walkers/joggers who pound the streets daily all up and down the country in fact when people stare the majority of them are thinking, 'I should really do something like that to keep fit,'

If you don't want to run around the town though there are plenty of alternatives.
a) Walk/jog in the countryside or out of town,
b) Join a walking club or similar club- look in the yellow pages,
c) Join a gym then walk or jog on the treadmill and machines or
d) Do exercise classes/circuits at your local leisure centre or gym.

All these exercises will help socially and more importantly help you to stay trim and keep the weight off and give you a good cardiovascular workout.

Hope it helps.
