Exercise Question And Answer

Question:
Hi, Is it better to go gym for 1 hour 3 times a week or everyday for half hour? I need to know this now because I do go gym a lot.

Answer:
As a rule I tell my clients that it is better to do the first option, that is to go to the gym 3 or 4 times a week for an hour or so rather than every day for half hour. The reasons are as follows - firstly if you incorporate: stretching, a warm up and cool down like you should do,
then a half hour session doesn't actually last that long.

Secondly a minimum of an hour is a good time to do both cardiovascular exercise and weights and do a good session on both which is important to raise the heartrate to its training zones (65%-85%) and also warm the body temperature (and the muscles) to their optimum working rate. A warm body and muscle will work harder and you will find that the calories will drop off more (cardiovascular wise) and the muscles will tone and build more (weights wise) if you raise the temperature of your body.

If you go into a workout cold you are more prone to injury because the muscles haven't been stretched and it will take longer for you to notice any difference in body shape or tone.

Thirdly - no professional sportspeople will train every day -they incorporate rest days into their training schedules - this is because if you train everyday you can either overtrain and suffer problems associated with this or you will suffer (especially if you do any weights) DOMS which is delayed onset muscle soreness and the muscle won't have time to rebuild.

If you have a rest day then the muscle will not be working so will rebuild itself and in the long run you will feel less pain in the muscles. However if you can't dedicate an hour to the gym because of work e.tc then if you do go every day chop and change your workout pattern so the muscles do have time to recover.

For example:

Day 1) Do Cardiovascular work,
Day 2) Do upper body muscle work,
Day 3) Do lower body and legs,
then back to Day 1.

Hope this helps, write back if you need any more advice.
